Independence Day: The Commemoration of Freedom of the Philippines
Independence Day is known as the most significant event in our country’s history. It is because after the challenging three centuries of Spanish colonial rule, the Republic of the Philippines finally attained its Independence. Filipinos celebrate it annually on June 12.
Going back to centuries ago, the Philippines is under the Spanish colonial rule over 300 years. Since the 18th century, the Filipinos have fought countless wars that have resulted in bloody revolutions under the Spanish Government. The Philippine revolutionary leaders to attained independence from foreign powers. With the help of American government and troops, we finally defeated the Spanish Asiatic fleet. On June 12, 1898, the Filipinos declared their independence for the first time. On that day, Philippine Revolution leaders assembled in Cavite, where Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo declared the country's freedom from Spanish colonization. It is then remembered on June 12 up until the current year. The sacrifices of national heroes are commemorated, the country’s sovereignty is honored, citizens are instilled with nationalism, and the culture and tradition of the Filipinos are celebrated. It is a public holiday and a day off for the general population where schools, most businesses are closed. It is a day where people, including government officials, employees and students participate in nationwide parades. The main highlight of this event is singing the national anthem while watching the big Philippine flag raised at the top of the pole and the police and military parade in Manila headed by the country’s incumbent president, followed by a speech and a 21-gun salute.
Due to the hardship and determinism of our leaders, we finally attained to be free in our own country. We should acknowledge and thank them for their sacrifices and to the lives that have been lost in fighting for freedom of the Philippines. Let us give them a big salute!
